Healing Herbal Hot Chocolate

Inspired by the traditional medicine of cacao to nourish postpartum bodies, this hot chocolate blends the benefits of organic cocoa with anti-inflammatory and blood sugar regulating cinnamon; rose to support the tender heart; nervous system-nourishing tulsi; warming ginger; and soothing marshmallow. Directions: Add 2-4 teaspoons to warm milk and sweeten to taste with honey, sugar or sweetener.

Nourish and Soothe Tea

A delicious and nourishing herbal tea hand-crafted by Amma together with Hairy Violet Herbal. Nutritive nettle boosts essential nutrients and minerals, and chamomile which calms the mind, supports the digestive system and relaxes tense muscles. Tulsi and linden support the nervous system; elderflower lifts the spirit; and calendula supports the lymphatic system. Rose petals open the heart and remind the busy parent to mother themselves.

Directions: Steep 1 teaspoon per cup of boiling water for 15-20 minutes, and sweeten to taste. Drink up to three cups a day.

Refresh and Energise Foot Soak

Treat tired and achy feet with a blend of magnesium salt, which helps to relieve sore muscles and aids in sleep; anti-inflammatory pink Himalayan salt, which is believed to draw toxins from the body; calendula and chamomile to nourish the skin and relax tense muscles; and eucalyptus and peppermint to cleanse and refresh. Lavender and rosemary essential oils promote sleep and rest, and help to increase circulation.

Directions: Fill the muslin bag and add it to a tub of warm water. Make yourself comfortable and soak your feet for around 20-30 minutes. After the salt has dissolved, you can use the muslin bag to gently exfloiate your skin. After the soak, dry your feet thoroughly, before moisturising. The bag can simply be washed and reused.

Rest and Recover Bath Salts

Soak away the stresses of the day with a blend of magnesium salt, which helps to relieve sore muscles and aid in sleep; anti-inflammatory pink Himalayan salt, which is believed to draw toxins from the body; calendula and oats to nourish the skin and soothe irritation; and rose, for relaxation, self-care and healthy boundaries. Lavender essential oil promotes sleep and rest. Comes with a linen bag to soak in the bath.

Directions: Fill the muslin bag with the bath salt blend and add to the bath while it’s running. If you don’t have a bath tub, try a relaxing foot or hand bath. After the salt has dissolved you can use the muslin bag to gently exfoliate your skin. The bag can simply be washed and reused.

Albright's story

When Albright arrived in Glasgow at the height of the pandemic, she was concerned about facing pregnancy and birth alone. She felt a deep sense of isolation, with no friends or family here to talk to or share her experience. But a referral to Amma “changed everything”, says Albright, whose birth companions were there to support her through the final stages of pregnancy and during birth.

“Amma felt like my first family in Glasgow. They gave me power and knowledge and hope - I feel like a person who has rights and choices now and I am not afraid of anything.”

Who is Amma Birth Companions?

Amma Birth Companions is a Scottish charity that supports parents in Glasgow who might otherwise give birth alone. We provide care, information, and advocacy to ensure parents experiencing multiple disadvantages can give birth and parent safely and with dignity.

What does Amma do?

Our specialist team of volunteer birth and postnatal companions offers one-to-one practical and emotional support throughout pregnancy, labour and birth, and the early postpartum period. They are trained to deliver culturally safe, trauma-informed care to every individual we serve.

Our midwife and doula-led antenatal classes help to ensure the parents we support are aware of their rights and choices in relation to birth, promoting a greater sense of empowerment and confidence to self-advocate.

Our Amma Family peer support programme cultivates community through weekly drop-in sessions, monthly workshops, and quarterly outings. We foster collaboration amongst participants and build on our clients’ existing strengths, cultural traditions, and knowledge.

Who does Amma support?

Our clients include refugees, people seeking asylum, survivors of human trafficking, and other birthing people experiencing multiple disadvantages.

When was Amma founded?

Amma became a registered charity in May 2019 and is now in its fourth year of operations. To date, we have supported more than 200 clients.
