How Amma began

The idea for Amma was born in 2017, when our co-founder, Sarah Zadik, was working at the Red Cross managing a service for pregnant individuals navigating the asylum process in Glasgow.

Witnessing the challenges faced by these women, including language barriers and lack of support during childbirth, Sarah sought to integrate volunteer doulas into the service. The impact of this was evidently profound, but the model wasn't sustainable.

Eventually, Sarah partnered with an experienced doula, Helen MacDonald, to create a separate project, Amma Birth Companions, which would have the support and infrastructure in place to enable birth companionship on a much bigger scale.

With support from the local specialist midwifery team and other third sector organisations, the concept for Amma quickly gained momentum, attracting passionate volunteers and evolving into a registered charity in May 2019.

“Amma felt like my first family in Glasgow. They gave me power and knowledge and hope - I feel like a person who has rights and choices now and I am not afraid of anything.”

Mariam

“Before they came I did not know anything or what to expect from the UK system. I had to be in hospital for 4 days after birth, and they came to visit me every day so that was very nice. I felt supported where I would not have been otherwise.”

Yvonne

“I am so thankful to Amma. They were so kind, caring and patient. I cannot imagine what would have happened without them.”

Jessy

“They were supportive and educated and 100% with me, it felt like family, and I have not had that since coming to UK. I pray that one day I can repay this service by giving it back to someone who needs it like Amma did for me.”
